Zack`s Toda Racing Flywheel install

Usually Zack posts about his own car but I decided to give an update. Since I want any and every excuse to get my hands dirty and do things to help me retain my mechanical knowledge, I offered up my services to Zack to give him a hand this past weekend. This weekend’s project was to:

  1. Install the new Toda Racing lightweight, Chrome-molly 3.7kg,  flywheel.
  2. Replace the clutch with an Exedy OEM replacement.
  3. Replace the transmission with another lower Km used one. ( Zack’s current one, as with many high Km T50’s, had no 2nd gear synco left.

We didn’t have a scale at the time but the OEM flywheel is around 7Kg, so 3.7Kg is a big difference.

That was the plan so we headed to the Auto Hobby Shop to get cracking.

Aside from how TINY these flywheels are, you can see a clean difference between them and also that the OEM one is still in quite good shape.

This car already had an Exedy clutch previously put in it so it will make Zack a good spare. We had it apart so we replaced anything we could.

Here is the new Toda Racing Flywheel in it’s new home. Looks great and after testing we could hear the added response of the throttle. The classic change in idle was slightly, emphasis on slightly, more apparent but nothing to even think about. This is basically one of the first real engine modifications on this 4AGE, but I’m sure not the last.

We did a video to compare the gain in response which was more noticeable in the shop, on the Tach( forgot to shoot), and of course behind the driver’s seat. This was a simple spin up of the engine before and after. See the video below.

All in all, Zack has driven his car for the past few days and says the car feels much more “Alive” than before.
Awesome !

How much does a flywheel like this cost?
    It really looks good!

Thanks for the answer, I thought it’d be more expensive.
I wonder if there is any difference in the torque delivery, an update after some kilometres is welcome!
