So I’ve been in a between a rock and a hard place in my decision to pursue some way of keeping my automotive skills sharpened. So some of you may know what I drive as a daily driver. Picture Below.
I have a 2001 Toyota Allex. Not what I would consider a fantastic base for tuning, but like may things in Japan you have to do what you need to with what you got. First off I really delayed touching the Allex since it’s an automatic. There are quite a few parts for the 1NZ-FE but not nearly as many as other engines. If I were in Canada I could break out the fab gear and make whatever I needed. In Japan is not the case though.
I don’t plan on going to deep into modifying the Allex since the basic pieces I want such as ECU, Intake, Exhaust, and Suspension are going to cost me enough money just to do a light tune.
The ECU I’m planning is a Link ECU G4 Storm wire in Universal EMS system. Main reason is since the Toyota is just since I can’t get another car right now I can which the ECU over to another car when the time comes. Also the interface that Link uses is very nice aside from many other reasons. AEM wideband and Link’s IAT sensor and Header board for easy installation.
Intake / Exhaust – is just a basic short ram filter system ( Apexi / Blitz ). No CAI available for it from what I can find, so I’ll make some piping to keep the heat around the filter down. Exhaust will be a mild Catback system, possibly TRD as long as it’s not a noise box.
The Suspension I’m still not sure what to do. I would like to use some KYB’s and (suitable brand) springs maybe or the other thing that is interesting me is the TRD Sportivo suspension kit. It comes with struts, springs and sway bar kits. Adjustable would be the best but a decent set is well as most people know not the cheapest.
Other things that could benefit the slight tune would be an external transmission cooler and some lighter wheels. And get rid of the AWFUL Grill, I have no idea what the designer from Toyota was thinking when he/she made that….. .
We’ll see what happens, funding is small so this will probably a long time. I’m not a brand elitist however I don’t like using flaky cheap crap on any car ,whatever it is.
