When we talk about sports-cars, the main features are power and lightness. British car manufacturer’s philosophy is to build something unique and innovative; something closer to sport driving than street legal driving. Lotus, Caterham, Westfield and Radical’s main targets especially revolve around motor-sports!
Their own ideas are to design a lightweight sports-cars that gives car enthusiasts the chance to push their driving skills over their limits, using new technologies combined to a high knowledge level. Most of times lightweight body parts, under body aerodynamics, rear wings, dashboards and seats are manufactured in carbon fiber, and assembled by hand.
Although British makers use top level materials and components into their creations, someone may break the rules customizing and melding parts from Japanese manufacturers.
Lotus are pioneers of lightweight cars. Colin Chapman, Lotus cars founder, was an engineer and a British motor-sport driver with the lightweight obsession; he has never played by the rule book, and his philosophy was “adding power makes you faster on the straights, subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere”.
Even though Lotus was the pioneer throughout the Twenty century, World car makers developing sports-cars use Chapman’s philosophy to the present day!
