I knew Filippo before he moved his first steps in the Drift All Stars European Championship almost 3 years ago. The rookie year was amazing for Filippo because he ranked 6th in the final standing and because he was the first Italian drifter registered in an European Championship!
Since Filippo became a Pro driver, he believed in his own talent and finally I’ve got a short interview about his own experience into Drifting across Europe:
[Gio] What car do you prefer to drift ?
[Filippo] I took up drifting with a small platform Mazda MX-5 because i’ve always liked Mazda cars. When i was younger i played with Playstation games like Gran Turismo or Need For Speed and i’ve always choosen Mazda cars like MX-5 or RX7.
[Gio] When did you start drifting ?
[Filippo] I started drifting almost 5 years ago in the street of my city with my stock daily-driving MX-5, although I race in a professional championship from only two years, exactly in one of the more important European Drift Championship, the Drift All Stars (Jdm AllStars).
[Gio] What is the most important point of your car’s current setup ?
[Filippo] The MX-5 is one of the more difficult platform to use in drift because is very short and small, so the most important thing that me and my team builder have considered is the best compromise among weight and power, so the most important thing that we have considered is the lightness! My car weight approx 890 Kg with 340Hp; the car is very very fast, especially in transition points and has a lot of traction, this is the reason why i can face with a very high level Championship like Drift All Stars.
[Gio] What is your favorite track?
[Filippo] I don’t have a favorite track, I like all the space where i can do drift but if I can choose I prefer the circuit with a very huge drift speed entry and i like also the big place parking areas where some races are created. For example one of the coolest place where I did a race in Drift All Stars 2011 was the circuit created in London below the Wembley Stadium.
[Gio] Who is your favorite professional drifter ?
[Filippo] I like a lot of drift drivers, surely all the drivers that I know are better then me, because I keep learning my driving skills watching them driving, so improving my drifting level. Anyway i think that for sure one of the best drifter in the World is Luke Fink, whom was my team mate in 2012 Drift All Stars season. I like also a lot of drivers like Alan Sinnot, Luis Lopez, Nigel Colfer and Ryan Tuerck.
[Gio] What drifting technique do you often use or prefer ? Handbrake, Powerslide…?
[Filippo] I prefer powerslide drift, like start drifting with a flick or a load transfer, but it depends on the track layout and on what it requires. Sometimes it is better to start a drift with the handbrake…the most important thing is do drifting everywhere and any time, so I do what is required by judges and all that can improve my level.
[Gio] What is your car set up worth?
[Filippo] Building an high professional race car is very expensive; we have used all the best race parts we find around, and luckily lot of works was made by me and my builder team as well. So, I would like to thanks Car System and my sponsor Drift Paradise…anyway lot of money! LOL!
[Gio] What’s your next car project?
[Filippo] Nowadays I have a Mazda RX7 FD3S too. Though it’s a working progress, maybe it will be ready for a future Formula Drift Championship!
I’d like to thanks Filippo for his availability and for what he taught me about drifting so far!
